Shaggy Mouse

Posted by Pastor Ron Sunday, February 20, 2011 8:00:00 AM

I'm not a big fan of having a mouse in the house, but seeing one on a dive is always welcome. This is the aptly named Shaggy Mouse Nudibranch.

There is a wonderful variety of interesting creatures here in the cold waters of Puget Sound and we are well stocked with nudibranchs ~ underwater slugs with naked gills on their back.

The Shaggy Mouse is is a voracious predator and reportedly consumes half to all of its body weight per day.  Colonizing Anemones are their primary prey (tomorrow's picture post.)  They're also happy to take big bites out of Metridium Anemones and Sea Pens.

So while I like to see a Shaggy Mouse on a dive there are a host of other critters that don't like having the 'mouse in the house'.
