Cherished Beliefs vs. Truth

Posted by Pastor Ron Monday, December 08, 2014 3:12:00 AM

Those who want to believe the truth are fewer than those who want to believe that what they believe is true. This is not a trivial matter per a Scripture passage toward the end of this post.

When a cherished belief is exposed as false a choice will be made. To not make a choice is itself a choice.

Once the light of truth lands upon a false cherished belief there will be trouble.  Often there will be great distress. There might even be confusion.

And there will be tides of rejection. Rejection of the truth.. rejection of the false cherished belief.. rejection of the need to make a choice. Back and forth the soul wavers.

There will be attempts at reconciling the false cherish belief with the truth; ignoring the folly of merging light with darkness. This is not possible.

There will be attempts at mental  and emotional compartmentalization:  cherished belief in this box and truth in that box. In reality the truth box is empty. Truth cannot be compartmentalized.

Hearts fill - bitterness toward those who challenge our cherished belief or gratitude for those who brought the light of truth to bear. Or both for a while until the heart settles into one or the other.

This Scripture helps me make my choice between Cherished Belief and Truth (emphasis mine):

The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness. But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God from the beginning chose you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth 2 Thessalonians 2:9-13

And this Scripture reminds me that the choice must be made:

Examine everything and retain only what is genuine.   1 Thessalonians 5:21

Happily the above verse implies that there will be some cherished beliefs that pass the examination and can be retained.. and having been found to be true they will now be Cherished Truths!
