The fleet began to grow

The fleet began to grow Picture above: we stopped at Bowman Bay on our way home from picking up a couple of new kayaks. We put them into the water and paddled around the corner to Deception Pass bridge. We hadn't checked the current tables but the timing was more than perfect ~ God blessed us with complete slack... read more

Right into the ditch

Right into the ditch We were given two kayaks as gifts and set out paddling the estuary of Ebby Slough. More precisely the drainage ditches of Ebby Slough. Of course we didn't pay any attention to the tide chart but it is not an insignificant detail here. Happily unaware that we were being blest beyond what ... read more

You say good bye ~ I say hello

You say good bye ~ I say hello We are blessed to be a part of sending out so many Village Missionaries from Machias Community Church and Contenders Bible School. But it comes at a cost ~ it is hard to say good bye to our friends. Charlie and Rhonda are serving with Village Missions at Wishram Washington on the... read more

Finger lickin' good

Finger lickin' good Cucumaria Miniata ~ one of the few scientific names that actually sounds kind of cool in my opinion. Otherwise these fanatical finger lickers are known as Orange Sea Cucumbers. They alternate sticking their arms into their mouth to eat what ever has been captured since the last finger... read more

Beautiful March Point

Beautiful March Point Where not all the clouds are clouds, not all the trees are trees and the water is so thin it disappears twice each day. OK ~ beauty is in the eye of beholder but I find it impossible to pass March Point either by car or boat and not look and the surreal scene of smoke and flaming... read more

How do they know?

How do they know? How does the Red Irish Lord know what colors to use to blend in. Why do they even use different colors? Why not just go shades of green? The RIL pictured above is perched on a ledge 100' below the surface. You can see in the background how dark and green everything appears. All of the... read more

What we see

Posted by Pastor Ron Tuesday, March 01, 2011 8:00:00 AM
What we see We see light emitted by or reflecting off of objects. Water absorbs light. The first colors to be absorbed are red, orange and then yellow. That is why underwater pictures often appear to have a blue/green cast. At depth that is the only color left. Here in Puget Sound light is... read more

More Coldwater Color - the King

Posted by Pastor Ron Monday, February 28, 2011 8:00:00 AM
More Coldwater Color - the King Puget Sound King Crab are a protected species now in Washington State. They are a great example of how colorful coldwater marine animals can be. They look fearsome but these slow moving giants are actually quite docile. Still, I wouldn't stick a finger into that pincher and expect... read more

Sea Pen

Posted by Pastor Ron Sunday, February 27, 2011 8:00:00 AM
Sea Pen These filter feeders are another marine animal that look like a plant. Actually, each Sea Pen is a colony of individual 'animals' called polyps that are working together to survive. The primary polyp becomes the bulbous body that is embedded into the sand or mud enough that it can... read more
